Facts and Derived Facts Table
This template is used to detail out the fact tables in dimension modeling phase. Fact tables contain all the measures (also known as facts in the Dimensional Modeling Lingo), for a given combination of dimensions (For example sales revenue for a combination of location, product, channel etc..). This template helps you to list the facts (directly picked from the source systems) and derived facts (facts derived from these basic facts).

When is Facts and Derived Facts Table used?

Please refer to Facts+ Derived Facts matrix in Data Warehouse Dimensional Modeling Process for the context of this template.

This template is used during dimensional model phase. After a provisional list of data marts have been lined out and we know the fact table grains, its time to now set-up Foundation facts and any derived facts. This one exercise has to be done keeping in mind at least the medium term application of the fact.

Why is it used?

This is a single point capture of all the facts- base as well as derived. The language and other aspects of these category of templates should be business friendly, as they have to sign-off on the same.
